Best Time to Visit Rotorua
Rotorua sees rain in every month of the year, and its geothermal steam is often more dramatic in the cold — here's when to go, and when to think twice.
Best: September – November (spring)
Days lengthen after winter, crowds and prices sit below the summer peak, and the geothermal parks are usually quieter than during school holidays.
Second choice: March – May (autumn)
Warm days linger into March, evenings cool through May, and crowds and prices ease off from the summer peak — pack for rain regardless.
Think twice: late December – January
New Zealand's summer school holidays bring the busiest crowds, highest prices, and the most intense UV of the year.
| Month | Weather | Crowds | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 14–24°C, warmest month, very high UV | Very high | High | School summer holidays peak; geothermal parks and Hobbiton get busy; book accommodation and popular tours ahead |
| February | 13–23°C, still warm | High | High | Summer weather continues; fewer school-holiday crowds than January; UV remains very high |
| March | 11–21°C | Medium | Medium | Warm days linger; evenings start to cool; a good month for hiking and lake activities |
| April | 9–18°C | Medium | Medium | Autumn colours appear around the lakes; rain is possible any day of the year here |
| May | 6–15°C | Low–medium | Medium | Cooler mornings begin; steam over the geothermal parks becomes more visible in the cold air |
| June | 4–13°C, morning frost possible | Low | Low–medium | Steam and mist over the geothermal areas are at their most dramatic; ski season begins on Ruapehu, about two and a half hours away |
| July | 3–12°C, coldest month | Low | Low | Frosty mornings are common; hot pools and thermal parks are especially popular for the contrast with the cold air |
| August | 4–13°C | Low | Low | Still winter conditions; fewer visitors than any other month; ski season continues on Ruapehu |
| September | 6–15°C | Low–medium | Low–medium | Spring begins; days lengthen; crowds remain lower than the summer peak |
| October | 8–17°C | Medium | Medium | Milder weather returns; a comfortable month for The Redwoods and lake walks |
| November | 10–19°C | Medium | Medium | Warming toward summer; school holidays haven't started yet, so it stays relatively quiet |
| December | 12–21°C, warming toward summer | High | High | School summer holidays begin around mid-month; crowds and prices rise sharply toward Christmas |
