Things to do on the Coromandel Peninsula

The Coromandel Peninsula is roughly 3 hours from Rotorua by road, so this is a long day trip rather than a casual add-on, or better spread over two days with a night in Whitianga or Tairua. The drive rewards you with ridgeline roads through kauri forest and a coastline of sheltered bays.

Cathedral Cove is reached on foot (an uphill walk each way), and Hot Water Beach only works within about two hours either side of low tide, so check tide times before setting out.

Expect NZD 20-40 for parking and shuttle options near the main coves, and budget the return drive into your day rather than treating it as free time.
