Things to do at Whakarewarewa Village

Whakarewarewa is a living village, not a geothermal park: around 20 to 30 people from Tūhourangi Ngāti Wāhiao still live here, and the steam vents in their gardens double as ovens and cooking pools. It sits about 3 kilometres south of central Rotorua, roughly a 10-minute drive or a 25-minute walk from the lakefront.

Entry runs to roughly 55 NZD for an adult on a self-guided or short tour, more for a package with a cultural performance and a hāngī meal, and a full visit takes around 2 hours. The difference from Te Puia next door is the guide: tours are led by a resident who explains which pools their own family cooks in, not a script written for the site.

Pōhutu geyser, visible from the village boundary, erupts once or twice an hour without a fixed schedule.
