Things to do in Hamilton
Hamilton sits on the Waikato River, New Zealand's longest, about 1 hour 30 minutes northwest of Rotorua by road and roughly 1 hour 45 minutes south of Auckland, which makes it a practical stopover between Rotorua, Waitomo (around 1 hour further southwest) and Raglan on the west coast.
The main draw is Hamilton Gardens, a free-entry, award-winning collection of themed enclosed gardens laid out along the riverbank rather than a single ornamental park. Budget half a day to walk the full circuit at a reasonable pace. Summer maxima sit around 24°C, winter around 13°C with morning fog off the river common June to August.
The city itself is workaday rather than scenic, so treat it as a functional base and garden stop rather than a multi-day destination.
