Things to do at Huka Falls
Huka Falls sits on the Waikato River about an hour south of Rotorua, just north of Taupō, where the river is forced from roughly 100 metres wide into a gorge about 15 metres across. Around 220,000 litres of water a second push through that gap, dropping in a short, steep cascade rather than a single sheer wall.
The free viewpoint and walkway take about five minutes on foot from the car park, with no entry fee and no set opening hours.
Jet-boat operators run trips from Taupō that approach the base of the falls face-on, a different experience from the elevated view above, and one that costs extra on top of the free option.
